Reading: We are reading a folktale called: The Enormous Turnip. In this traditional Russian tale, an old man plants a turnip and urges it to grow. The turnip grows so big that the man cannot pull it up. He asks the help of others and is finally able to pull it up.
Reading focus skill: Sequencing
Spelling: Phonograms “-ack” and “ock”
Grammar: Nouns
Writing: Writing Prompts- students will be encouraged to start writing 5 sentence paragraphs.
Math: Missing Addend/ Mystery Number
Science: Science Experiment… Celery Stick Science
• If you are willing to donate celery stalks, plastic cups, or gummy bears to the class for our next two experiments, please write a note in your child’s planner. I will let you know if I need your contribution that day (we may have many responses).
• The end of first quarter is approaching quickly. Students will be able to participate in our first class store. They have been saving their class money for this event. If you can donate an item from the Dollar Store, or Target’s/ Walmart’s Dollar section please do by October 6th. Thank you in advance for your help.

Week of 9/12/11
This week in…
Reading: We are reading a realistic fiction called: Wilson Sat Alone. Wilson is always alone at school while his classmates do things together. When Wilson sees how a new girl quickly joins the other students, he learns about how to make friends. From then on, Wilson’s days of sitting alone are over.
Reading focus skill: Narrative Elements
Spelling: Phonograms “-at” and “ate”
Grammar: Telling Parts of Sentences
Writing: Advice Letters to Ira (Ira is a boy in the story, Ira Sleeps Over. He has to make a decision whether or not to bring his teddy bear to a sleep over.
Math: Fact Families
Science: Science Experiment… Jumping Raisins
•Please check and sign your child’s planners each night, they earn $1 of class money each day they bring it back signed.
•We finally have an end to our “Heat Advisory” and now have afternoon recess.
•If you are willing to donate raisins and vinegar to the class for our experiment this week, please write a note in your child’s planner. I will let you know if I need your contribution that day (we may have many responses).

Spelling: Inflection -ed (y to i) Students will need to change the "y" at the end of a word to an "i" before adding "ed"
Reading: Days with Frog and Toad- Toad finds a note from his friend Frog saying that he has gone off to be alone. Toad thinks Frog is feeling sad and does not want to see him. Frog assures Toad that he wanted to be alone just to think about how happy he is to have Toad for a friend.

Math: 2 and 3 Digit Addition and Subtraction
